Charlie Steinhice—December 29, 1995—“!Poem ""Immortality"" (Do not stand at my grave and weep...)”

According to RQ Winter 1991, p. 148, and Summer 1992, p. 470, the poem is titled “Immortality” and
the author is anonymous. It is sometimes attributed to Mary E. Frye, who says she wrote it in 1932.

It first came to the public’s attention because in December 1977 John Wayne read it at the funeral of
Howard Hawks. One of the mourners was John Carpenter, who used it for a television script he
was writing. The TV-movie “Better Late Than Never” appeared on NBC on Oct. 17, 1978, with
Harold Gould portraying an elderly man who delivered this as the graveside eulogy for an old
